Description
2000 Land Rover Range Rover 4.6 HSEThis very well sorted and maintained Range Rover is offered for sale by a long-term owner (owned since 2/2005 at approximately 63,381 miles). Seller has service records from 02/2005 to date. This vehicle looks, runs & drives great; as of this writing, this Rover has approximately 142,900 miles; however, the engine has less than 40,000 miles on it (see below for details). Seller has clear Pennsylvania title, in-hand; this vehicle is ready for immediate pickup & transfer to the winning buyer.
P38A Range Rover values are on the upswing; NOW IS THE TIME TO BUY. I have driven just about every version of Range Rover available in the USA, & the P38A version is my personal favorite out of all of them; from my perspective, nothing else offers this combination of style, utility, luxury, power, and off-road capability.
Exterior paint color is Java Black (Paint Code 697), with Lightstone interior (Trim Code P; light tan leather with dark piping), beige headliner (professionally replaced), silver OEM Hurricane 18” alloy wheels; build date is 12/1999; very strong, upgraded low mileage 4.6L V8 engine with Bosch EFI engine management, full time four wheel drive system, with a two speed (separate selectable high/low range) transfer case, & factory multi-level adjustable air suspension system. Factory Class III receiver tow hitch. Euro-style clear turn signal lenses. Integrated OEM Homelink garage door openers. Factory cruise control. Intermittent windshield wipers. OEM front brush guard & OEM running boards added under seller’s ownership. Substantially upgraded replacement engine & engine management system added under seller’s ownership.
This engine runs super-strong (see upgrade details below) & this vehicle drives better now than when it left the factory; the transmission & transfer case both operate & shift smoothly. The air suspension system works properly. The HVAC climate control A/C blows cold & the heating system/automatic temperature controls work properly. The OEM Harman/Kardon stereo multi- speaker sound system, including the remote 6 CD changer, AM, FM, Weather, & integrated cassette player (Yes!), all work properly.
The leather upholstery, carpeting, interior trim, & headliner are all in nice shape. There is some cracking/crazing of the driver’s seat bottom leather seat cover (normal wear, not damage). An add-on Parrot CK3100 Bluetooth system works intermittently (unknown why); this system also has a dedicated external speaker, and the small display to the right of the steering wheel is the Bluetooth system's head unit. A portable, dash-mounted Garmin Nuvi 760 GPS unit (with Lifetime Garmin map updates) is included with this vehicle; that unit works properly.

The current Pennsylvania State Safety Inspection is valid through 1/2022. This Rover has been garaged for most of seller’s ownership; it has been parked outside since 9/2020, as seller needed the garage space for other vehicles.
The original engine was replaced in 2012 (see above summary) when that engine “dropped a cylinder liner” (a common failure point with OEM P38 & related alloy block engines), which caused a head gasket failure. Instead of simply replacing the head gasket, I chose to go with a BRAND NEW (not rebuilt) “top hat” engine block assembly sourced from Atlantic British (flanged cylinder liners, much more reliable than OEM) which included new engine block internal components (crank, pistons, rods, oil pump, cam, etc.), with some carefully selected performance upgrades (see summary above). Basically, this Rover was upgraded with a new, much better, more powerful engine & engine management system. The new engine was personally prepped and installed by Master Rover Technician Dan Grip. This is arguably the strongest running Rover 4.6 HSE available anywhere. As stated above, it has less than 40,000 miles on it.
Engine oil and filter changed approximately every 2,000 – 5,000 miles; the most recent oil change was at 139,985 miles (vehicle miles - not engine miles) - 1/2020. Transmission fluid/filter was last changed at 114,366 miles – 12/2013.
There are no OBDII computer codes, check engine lights, EAS faults, HVAC codes, or any other control system lockouts/error codes. The sunroof, tailgate, door switches, power windows, mirror adjusters, & door locks all work properly.
Please keep in mind this vehicle has been on the road for more than twenty years; it is not showroom new...and it is British. As one might anticipate with a Rover of this vintage, the various EAS and HVAC electronic sensors can glitch from time to time; as a general rule, a simple diagnostic reset will normally remedy the issue (see below for included diagnostic cable). If this sort of thing is challenging, then perhaps a P38A Rover is not for you.
The body is straight, except for a shallow dent in the upper driver’s door (below the window, caused by a service tech). There is also a very minor “door ding” in the driver’s side rear quarter panel, and a very small “paint ding” (it was touched up) in the center of the passenger side rear door (paint only; door is straight). The paint is in good shape overall, with some minor clear coat fade in a small spot on the hood, on the driver’s side, & some very minor surface scratches, also in the hood, on the driver's side.
The leather seating is in nice shape overall, with some cracking/crazing of the driver’s seat leather bottom cover (just from normal wear, not from damage); both front seat heaters work. As stated, above, the driver's side seat cushion/foam was professionally replaced. All of the seats are very comfortable and supportive. The rear seat backs fold down, & the rear seat bottom frame folds up, it increase "flat floor" cargo area. The interior wood trim is still in place (although the original “clear-coat” veneer is mostly gone). There are no odors, rips, or tears. The carpeting & OEM floor mats are in nice shape. The headliner in this vehicle was professionally replaced (see above) & is in very nice condition (no sagging whatsoever). The OEM folding/removable cargo cover/shelf is operational & included.
This Rover has been smoke-free during the seller's ownership. The OEM cigarette lighter was replaced by a dual-port USB charger outlet. The rear "ashtray" door located at the back of the center console stays open from time to time.
The glass is all good; that said, there is a small crack in the center of the windshield (it was there when seller purchased this Rover); it has been stable for the 16+ years of seller’s ownership, and has neither presented any visibility issues nor any issues in passing the rigorous Pennsylvania annual vehicle safety inspection. Supplemental window tint also professionally installed.
A few years ago, a wayward rodent attempted to make a nest under the hood, on top of the intake manifold (which did not go well for said rodent); the only residual damage from that errant rodent’s escapade was a small portion of the under-hood insulation blanket having been chewed up, in a nest making attempt. Fortunately, the subject rodent was summarily evicted before anything else under the hood was disturbed.
The power steering hoses appear to be weeping; that said, the power steering reservoir maintains the proper fluid level. The valve covers also appear to be weeping a bit (this IS, after all, a British vehicle!); this is a very common issue with ALL of the pre L322 Rover engines.
As of 2021, the dash mounted OEM analog clock runs, but doesn't keep proper time (it runs slow); the hands still go around the dial at their own leisurely pace. Does anyone really know what time it is...does anyone really care?
The cargo load floor extension/bridge plate must be lowered by hand when the tailgate is opened; just flip it down, and all is good. It does automatically flip back up, when the tailgate is closed.
There is some corrosion at the back side of the exhaust system resonators (at the rear, below the exhaust outlets); the resonators are replaceable “wear” components. There is also some minor surface corrosion of some chassis/suspension components. The frame and body are both solid.
If you appreciate a “commanding” driving position, then you will very much like driving this Rover. And the seats in this vehicle are super comfortable! The air suspension functionality is just plain cool, too.
This Rover comes with two OEM key fobs (with OEM folding keys), the original Owner’s Manual/Books, OEM jack, and OEM spare tire/wheel assembly. The spare tire and Hurricane wheel assembly resides in an interior storage compartment located below the cargo load space. OEM carpeted floor mats & OEM rubber “winter” waterproof protective floor mats are included. A heavy-duty OEM rubber load space protective mat is also included.
Seller will also include a registered RSW Solutions EAS Unlock diagnostic USB cable with this vehicle; this is a proprietary diagnostic cable made by RSW Solutions that enables one to connect a computer with the RSW EAS Unlock app to the OBDII port in order to read, reset, & calibrate various P38A EAS & HVAC sensors, read/reset OBDII codes, & check real-time engine functions.
Seller encourages serious bidders to ASK QUESTIONS PRIOR TO BIDDING; seller also encourages prospective buyers to inspect the vehicle before bidding; vehicle inspection requests will be considered by appointment only.
