    Description

    Here is an interesting and varied group of envelopes on the subject of the horse racing and the Kentucky Derby. Three are first days covers for the vivid 1974 stamp commemorating horse racing and one is a 1951 cover marking the 77th Kentucky Derby. They are in fine condition with minor darkening of the paper on the 1957 cover.
    The 1951 cover is nicely illustrated and marks the May 5 1951 event. The three-cent prexy or presidential series definitive stamp is tied by a Louisville KY machine cancel of May 5. The envelope is hand addressed to one J Hook, Harding Road, Elizabeth NJ.
    Then we have three different FDCs of the same format marking the 100th anniversary of the Kentucky Derby. The stamps are tied by May 4 1974 first day of issue postmarks of Louisville KY. Three different famous race horses are superimposed over a horizontal view of a race in progress. The horses are Secretariat, in 1973 the fastest horse; Donerail, with the largest payoff of 4.90 in 1913; and Aristides, the first winner, in 1875. The FDCs are each numbered 63 of a limited edition produced by the International Stamp Collectors Society.
