Description

I have for sale souvenir shovel spoons from the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition that was held in San Francisco, California.  These shovel spoons were made by the Shreve company of San Francisco and they replicated the original gold shovel that was used by then President William Taft in the groundbreaking ceremony for the P.P.I.E.  The Shreve company also made the original gold shovel used by President Taft.  Only three spoons are picture.  Spoon number one has a large bowl & is pictured in photos 1-4.  It reads sterling on the reverse neck, it is 4 1/2 inches long and the bowl is 1 3/4 by 1 5/8 inches.  On the handle top it shows an eagle with a ribbon below.  On the ribbon it reads ORO EN PAZ, FIERRO EN, GUERRA (gold in peace, iron in war)  In the bowl it has the outline of the original shovel blade.  On the shovel blade it reads USED BY - WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT - PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES - OCTOBER 14, 1911 IN TURNING THE - FIRST SPADEFUL OF EARTH FOR THE - PANAMA PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION - TO BE HELD IN - SAN FRANCISCO - 1915.  On the reverse neck it has the word STERLING & PAT APPD FOR.  This spoon is tarnished and its in a high grade circulated condition.  Spoon number two is in the shape of the shovel without the large bowl & is photo numbers 5-8.  On the reverse neck of this spoon it reads STERLING but it looks like it was gilted sterling when new.  It has the exact same description as spoon number one.  It is 4 inches long with the bottom blade being 1 1/8 by 3/4 inches.  It's also in a high grade circulated condition.  Spoon number three is shaped like number two with the same description as number two.  This is a gilted metal spoon, not sterling.  It is photos #9-12.  It has the same description as spoon #2.  This spoon looks to be uncirculated or close to it.  Spoon number four is not pictured.  This spoon looks to be a crude replica of spoon number two.  Please see more in my EBAY STORE  at TE COLLECTABLES.  (16,645)
