Thanks for LookingLate 1800s Antique Sweetheart Hat Pin "New York Yacht Club Button" G & Cie Paris -
Notes: "Sweetheart" hat pins were worn in honor of the ladies' husband, father, son, brother, and beau who served in the military or as in this case as part of an elite private social club. The buttons were part of uniforms or member’s jacket, and easily recognized by friends, relatives and neighbors. It was a way to keep their loved ones close to them and I believe as in this case show off wealth and family status in the community.
The height of the hatpin era was from about 1890 to 1925 which coincides with the time this Paris manufactured button was created. The actually conversion to a hat pin is not known but the New York Yacht club was founded in 1845 and the first woman was admitted as an owner in 1894 the widowed "Mrs Lucy Carnegie and her Yacht the Dungeness (there is no connection between this hat pin and Mrs C she is only used as a point of reference)
