Sonja Henie b. April 1912 – d. October 12 1969. Norwegian figure skater who was an Olympic Champion in 1928, 1932, and 1936 for womens singles. She was a ten-time world champion 1927-1936, and six-time European champion 1931-1936.
She held more Olympic and World titles than any other woman’s figure skater. She also had a successful film career with Fox from 1936-1943.
Henie formed a business arrangement with Arthur Wirtz, who produced her touring ice shows "Hollywood Ice Revue" in the 1940’s.
1950-52 she produced her own Ice shows under the name “Sonja Henie Ice Review,” until legal issues arose from collapsed bleachers.
From 1953-1956 , she appeared with Morris Chalfen’s European “Holiday On Ice” tour.
In 1956 after a disastrous tour in South America and bouts of alcoholism, she could not keep up with the demands of touring, and she retired.
Sonja Henie’s popularity attracted many of her fans who were not familiar with ice shows to attend these events.
