Description
Several years ago, after a 50 year layoff, I made 5 or 6 warbonnets. They were pretty good. I have now sold them all. I bought these feathers on eBay from a Chinese vendor. They are very strong, very large feathers, ideal for the purpose. They are a dark grayish brown, looking darker from a distance. The typical Plains warbonnet uses from 28-32 feathers, plus a primary crown feather in the middle. They could be and were made from immature Golden eagle feathers (which are white at the bottom with dark tips), MATURE Golden eagle feathers (which are a dark /light brown splotched feathers throughout) and the variations between the mature and immature. Also, Bald eagle feathers were used, though not as frequently. There are historic examples of each in museums,
For one of the headdresses I made, I used these feathers, used a gloved finger and small sponge to splotch them with L'Oreal Platinum hair dye, left it for a few minutes, rinsed it and followed directions. After drying, I used a coconut oil mixture to restore any natural oils lost, The resulting bonnet gave a very good imitation of the mature golden eagle feather bonnets. If you decide to try this, Google as many examples of mature golden eagle feathers as you can. Every bird and every feather is different, and you can get a good range of what they look like and a good deal of comfort that you cannot go far wrong if you are careful.
